Student Volunteers

Student volunteers are vital to the efficient operation and continued success of ICFP. The student volunteer program is a chance for students from around the world to participate in the conferences whilst assisting us in preparing and running the event. In return, student volunteers receive free registration and access to all sessions. See the Student Volunteer page for more information.

There are two rounds of application:

Student Research Competition (SRC)

The Students Research Competition offers a great opportunity for Students to present their work without a paper submission. Students with accepted posters will also be able to claim travel support.

The deadline for submission is July 16th More information on the Student Research competition here

PL Mentoring Workshop (PLMW)

The purpose of this mentoring workshop is to encourage senior undergraduate and beginning graduate students to pursue careers in programming language research. We are specifically interested in attracting groups who have traditionally not had the opportunity to participate in research in functional programming. This workshop will be a combination of learning about the work being done in several areas of programming language research and mentoring with respect to helping students prepare for graduate school and the rest of their career. We will bring together leaders in programming language research from academia and industry to give talks on the kind of research typically performed after obtaining a Ph.D. The workshop will engage students, specifically interested in programming language research, in a process of imagining how they might contribute to the world.

This workshop is part of the activities surrounding the ICFP conference and takes place the day before the main conference. One goal of the workshop is to make the ICFP conference more accessible to newcomers. We hope that participants will stay through the entire conference.. A limited amount of travel funding is available to support some student participants. See the PLMW page

The deadline for application is June, 15th

Shared Rooms

If you wish to share a room with a student attendee at the conference or another property, consider using ConferenceShare.

Other source of funding

Are you a student who is a presenter or co-author of a paper, but need money to attend the conference? The SIGPLAN Professional Activities Committee (PAC) provides support to help advance professional goals such as these. Even if you are not a SIGPLAN member, you can apply – as long as the event you are participating in is sponsored by SIGPLAN, you are a member of ACM, and your advisor is a member of SIGPLAN.

We expect you to apply for these funds only when you would not be able to attend the meeting otherwise. Applications will be evaluated on a first-come, first-served basis. PAC expects to fund applications for the following activities:

A one-year SIGPLAN membership for ACM students that are currently not SIGPLAN members. Registration fees and shared accommodation expenses for student attendance at a SIGPLAN sponsored conference where the applicant is to present a paper, is co-author of a paper on the program, or is participating in a student poster session. PAC expects institutions to share costs in the funding of students. Any other activity deemed appropriate by the committee.
